The ceasefire between the Al-Sharaa administration and the SDF was extended for 15 days.

On Wednesday, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) must be gradually integrated into the regular Syrian army under a fundamental agreement.

He claimed that the international community supports the peaceful integration of the SDF into the national army, called for maintaining the ceasefire between the two parties, and confirmed that Berlin’s invitation to Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa remains open.

Wadephul emphasized the need for dialogue with al-Sharaa regarding the reconstruction of Syria and the deportation of Syrian people responsible for serious crimes in Germany, issues considered essential to German foreign policy.

In Germany, the Kurdish diaspora and Syrian minorities such as Alevis, Christians, and Druze hold daily demonstrations against abuses attributed to Damascus troops in predominantly Kurdish regions.

Wadephul and the foreign ministers of France, the United Kingdom, and the United States called for avoiding a “security void” in Syria. They deemed it necessary to negotiate the peaceful integration of northeastern Syria into a unitary state that effectively guarantees the rights of all its citizens.

In this context, the ceasefire between the government of al-Sharaa and the Kurdish-led SDF, which was set to expire on January 24, was extended for 15 days to facilitate the transfer of Islamic State militants.

President al-Sharaa gave the SDF until Saturday to lay down their arms and draw up a plan for integration with the Syrian army or face fighting. Government troops also seized large swathes of northern and eastern Syria, which weakened the SDF and forced the Kurdish militias to retreat.
